Date: Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023
Genre: Jazz/Blues/Soul/Funk
Dogtown Records recording artists Hip Grease began performing as a live unit in St. Louis clubs in 1999. Excited about finding classic “SoulJazz” recordings being re-done by contemporaries, STL musicians, Ben Reece (reeds/woodwinds), Andy Coco (basses), and Dave Grelle (organ/piano/keys) created Hip Grease, a part time project with the specified goals of having fun playing jazz that makes people dance.
The band’s debut release “Greasin’” was recorded in 2014 at Sawhorse Studios, mixed by Andy Coco, and released on Dogtown Records, with Adam Hucke (flugel/trumpet), Ron Sikes (percussion), and Kyle Honeycutt (drums) joining the lineup. Greasin’ is an all instrumental record, featuring varying jazz styles and rhythms, 8 original compositions and a few funky interpretations of SoulJazz classics. The current performing unit features Grover Stewart Jr. on Drums.
